Pool water features installation covers the extras that make a pool feel finished: moving water you can hear, a warm spa beside the main pool and lights that change how it looks at night. Each feature needs its own plumbing, valves, power and sometimes a dedicated pump, so the earlier it is planned, the cleaner the result. This page gives an overview of the four main options and links to a detailed page for each. If you are still at the design stage, our custom pool design page explains how features fit the bigger picture.
Real projects in real yards. Some of these pools have a single feature, others combine a spa, a waterfall and lighting. Browse the photos below for ideas to bring to your consultation.
Features are easy to love in photos and harder to live with when they are chosen without a plan. These are the questions we help homeowners sort out.
We plan and install pool features for homeowners in Lexington, Andover, Reading, Burlington, Windham, Londonderry, Pelham and Salem, plus surrounding towns. Features can go in during a new build or be added to an existing pool, and we are just as glad to quote a single set of deck jets or new lights as a full renovation.
// Areas We Serve
We work with homeowners across northeastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. Pick your town to see local details, or ask us if yours is not listed.
We begin by asking how you picture using the pool: quiet evenings, kids playing, entertaining or soaking. That shapes which features make sense and where they go. Next we plan the equipment: how much water each feature needs, whether it shares a pump or gets its own, and where valves and controls sit. During construction, lines are run and pressure tested before the deck or shell covers them. Wiring for pumps and lights is done by a licensed electrician. At startup we adjust each feature and show you how to run it and how it gets shut down for winter.
Why Mountainscapes
Because we design and build the pool, the deck and the landscape, features are planned as part of the whole yard. A waterfall’s stone matches the walls and planting around it, and the spa sits where it gets the view you want.
Natural rock waterfalls and sheer descents that bring the sound of moving water and a strong focal point to the yard.
Arcs of water from the deck, smooth laminar streams, bubblers on a tanning ledge and spouts set in a wall.
A raised, heated spa that shares water with the pool and pours over its edge into the main basin.
LED underwater lights in white or color, placed to show off the water and make night swimming safer.
Correctly sized pumps, valves and pipe runs so each feature has enough flow without taking it away from filtration.
Switch features, lights and spa heat from a control panel or a smartphone app instead of turning valves by hand.
What does pool water features installation involve?
It depends on the feature. Most need dedicated plumbing from the equipment pad, valves to control flow and power for pumps or lights. Some, like a waterfall, also involve stonework and a raised base. We plan all of it with the pool layout so nothing has to be torn out later.
Can water features be added to an existing pool?
Many can. LED light upgrades are often simple, and deck jets can be added when a deck is being replaced. A spillover spa or a large waterfall usually ties in with a bigger pool remodeling project. We look at your current equipment and plumbing before recommending anything.
Which feature gives the most for the money?
For many families it is lighting, because it changes how the pool looks every evening and helps everyone see the steps and floor at night. After that, it depends on use. Families with young kids tend to love deck jets and bubblers, while people who swim into the fall often get the most from a spa.
Do water features make the pool colder?
Moving water exposed to the air loses heat and evaporates faster, so features running all day can cool a heated pool. Running them when you are actually out by the pool, rather than around the clock, and covering the pool overnight keeps that in check.
Are water features hard to winterize?
Each feature adds lines that must be cleared of water and protected before freezing weather. It is not difficult, but it has to be done every fall, and nobody should forget a line. Our seasonal closing service can take care of the feature lines along with the main pool plumbing.
Is a spa or a waterfall better for a smaller yard?
A spillover spa gives you a second use in the same footprint, which suits compact yards. A small sheer descent or a few deck jets add sound and motion without taking deck space. Large rock waterfalls need room for stone and a footing, so they fit better on bigger or sloped lots.
