Your Trusted Project Partner
Groton is a rural Middlesex County town of woods, farm fields, old stone walls and two rivers, the Nashua and the Squannacook. Lots here tend to be larger, often with long driveways, tall trees and a septic system to plan around. That shapes how we approach a Groton project: clearing only what the design needs, finding a pool spot with good sun and solid ground, and planning excavator access before anything is dug. Mountainscapes handles the design, the permits and the build. Smaller requests, like a liner swap or a new fire pit, are just as welcome.
On a wooded Groton lot, the pool, the clearing around it and the planting are really one decision. We work out tree removal, grading and retaining walls together, so the finished yard looks settled into the land rather than carved out of it.
Pools placed with care on larger Groton lots, with the dig planned around ledge, roots and the septic layout.
Selective tree, brush and stump removal to open up a sunny spot for a pool, patio or lawn.
Digging for pools, footings and utility trenches, with Dig Safe called before any machine breaks ground.
Block, fieldstone or boulder walls that turn a sloping Groton backyard into usable, level space.
Long country driveways rebuilt with a proper stone base and crown, so rain runs off instead of rutting.
Hardy trees and shrubs to soften the edges of a new clearing and screen a pool from the road.
New custom-measured vinyl liners for existing pools, a small job we are always glad to take on.
Wood-burning or gas fire pits with stone seating, placed a safe distance from trees and the house.
It only takes 30 seconds.

Chris installed a beautiful gunite pool for me. My kids love it and they cherish the day it gets opened. Chris did an amazing job designing the layout. He is a true artisan. I’ve been in business for 37 years and I’ve been around countless contractors. I highly recommend Mountainscapes.
I had the need for an emergency skimmer replacement during a pool deck replacement. Mountainscapes was the only company that got back to me and came right out and fixed things up to keep my project on schedule. Chris and his team were top notch. Highly recommended.
I have engaged Chris and his team on a number of landscape projects over the years. The pricing is good, the end result gorgeous, and Chris is always a pleasure to work with.
My experience having a pool installed was a great one! The owner Chris, worked with me to get exactly what I wanted. The team was friendly and very professional. I would highly recommend them!
Working with Chris and his team from MountainScapes was truly a pleasure building our pool this past year. Chris was a huge help working with the town on permitting and approvals (our town is notoriously difficult) and in helping us make our design dreams a reality.
...Today, one year post-completion, we are thrilled with the quality of MountainScapes' work. Chris, in particular, is something of a pool artist. It was truly worth it, but as homeowners you need to be prepared to be patient!
If you are considering an inground pool or any type of hardscape to your property, I would not recommend anyone other than Mountainscapes! Responsiveness, quality, professionalism!
Why Us
Before a single tree comes down, there should be a plan. Our founder, Christopher Underwood, earned a Landscape Architecture degree and has more than two decades of pool and landscape building behind him. On rural Groton land, that training pays off early, when clearing, grading and water flow are decided.

Can you build a pool on a wooded lot in Groton?
Usually, yes. Most wooded Groton lots can fit a pool once the right spot is chosen and some trees come down. We look for afternoon sun, firm ground and room for equipment, then plan the land clearing so you keep as much shade and privacy as possible around the edges.
What does a pool project in Groton typically cost?
Price depends on the pool type and size, how much clearing and excavation the site needs, and what patio and planting work goes with it. Our full projects mostly land between $50,000 and $150,000. A liner replacement, a fire pit or a drainage fix costs a small fraction of that.
Which permits does a Groton pool need?
An inground pool needs a Groton building permit, and the barrier and fencing around it must meet the Massachusetts building code. Work close to wetlands, ponds or the Nashua and Squannacook rivers can also need Groton Conservation Commission review under the state Wetlands Protection Act. We help prepare and coordinate each step.
Does my septic system affect where a pool can go?
Yes, it is one of the first things we map. Heavy machines need to stay off the leach field, and the pool, patio and fence need sensible distances from the tank and field. Knowing the layout early keeps the design realistic and avoids costly changes later.
Do you run into ledge when digging in Groton?
It can happen anywhere in this part of Massachusetts, where glacial soils hold boulders and bedrock. We call Dig Safe, study the site closely and plan for the possibility. If ledge turns up, we explain the options before work continues. Our excavation services page covers how we handle it.
From initial planning and design to engineering, permitting, and construction, we manage every stage of your pool and landscape project with precision and care.
