What to Consider When Building a Swimming Pool

Everything you need to think about before getting started.

Pool Type

Choosing the right pool type is one of the first major decisions in the design process. Gunite, fiberglass, and vinyl liner pools each offer different advantages in terms of customization, installation time, and cost. The right option depends on your design goals, timeline, and the level of customization you want.

Pool Location

Where the pool sits on your property affects sunlight, privacy, views, and how the space is used. Placement must also consider septic systems, property setbacks, utilities, and drainage. A thoughtful layout allows the pool to feel naturally integrated with the home and landscape.

Outdoor Living Space

A pool should feel like part of a larger outdoor living environment. Patios, lounging areas, fire features, and outdoor kitchens create spaces for relaxing and entertaining. Designing these elements together results in a more cohesive and functional backyard.

Safety & Code Requirements

Local building codes often require fencing, gates, alarms, and other safety features around residential pools. These measures help protect children and guests while meeting municipal regulations.

Pool Features

Modern pools can include many features that enhance both enjoyment and visual appeal, including tanning ledges, integrated spas, waterfalls, deck jets, lighting, and automated covers.

Decking & Surrounding Materials

The materials surrounding the pool affect both comfort and appearance. Natural stone, pavers, and textured concrete are popular choices that provide durability, slip resistance, and aesthetic appeal.

Equipment & Automation

Modern pool systems can often be automated and controlled through smartphone apps. Pumps, heaters, lighting, and filtration systems work together to maintain water quality and simplify maintenance.

Maintenance & Long-Term Care

Understanding maintenance helps protect your investment. Regular water balancing, seasonal care, and equipment servicing ensure the pool remains clean and functional for years to come.

// The Process

Our Process

// Phase 1
Design & Feasibility

Every project begins with a thoughtful design and planning phase. During this stage we review zoning requirements, setbacks, and site conditions to confirm the project can be built within local regulations.

// Phase 2
Budget Planning & Concept Development

Once the site and goals are understood, we develop a preliminary concept including a rough design sketch, outline of scope, site visit with our team, and initial budget estimate to align expectations early.

// Phase 3
Permitting & Project Coordination

Before construction begins we coordinate with the full team required for approvals. This may include engineers, wetland consultants, architects, and other specialists to prepare documents and secure permits.

// Phase 4
Construction & Project Management

Once permits are secured, our team manages construction from start to finish. We coordinate trades, schedule work, and oversee the build to ensure quality and efficiency.

It only takes 30 seconds.

Typical Pool Project Investment

The cost of building a swimming pool varies depending on design, site conditions, and features. Most pool installations are part of a larger outdoor living project including patios, landscaping, utilities, and grading. During the design phase we work with homeowners to establish a realistic budget based on the vision and property conditions.

Several factors influence the final project cost including pool size, excavation conditions, retaining walls, patio materials, heating systems, lighting, water features, and landscaping. Because every property is different, the most accurate way to determine cost is through a design consultation and site evaluation.
